Laundry, exercise and phone service keep a port stay comfortable, but they fail in different ways. Laundry depends on care instructions and a return deadline; a gym needs to fit the hours you can attend; connectivity needs to work where the yacht and your shore plans take you. Group the errands geographically while keeping those requirements separate.

Laundry instructions and collection

A bag of mixed washing conceals several different jobs. Personal clothing, uniforms, bed linen and delicate items may need different handling. Separate them before collection and identify any care-label restrictions, stains or finishing requirements. Pressing a uniform is a different request from washing and folding it.

Count the items where an exact return matters, and agree how they will be labelled. For several crew members, keeping personal loads identifiable avoids a new sorting job aboard. Note damage or special concerns before collection so that both sides understand what was handed over.

The useful deadline is when the clothing must be available to wear, allowing time to return it through the marina gate. Give that time with the actual collection point, receiver and berth. If the yacht is moving, agree the alternative before the laundry leaves. A promise to finish a load ashore does not by itself include its final delivery.

Same-day turnaround, stain removal and specialist fabric treatment need confirmation for the load. If uniforms are required before departure, identify which items are essential first; the whole bag need not dictate the same deadline.

Choose gym access you will actually use

The Tourist Bureau’s fitness directory is a starting point for nearby options. From there, establish whether the facility offers the kind of access you need: a single visit, several visits or a longer membership. A listing is not evidence that a day pass is available.

Compare the door-to-door routine rather than equipment alone. A facility that needs a car in both directions may be difficult to use between duties. Showers, towels and somewhere to leave belongings matter if you are combining a session with errands. A class may also require a separate reservation even when entry to the gym is covered.

For a changing schedule, find out whether a pass begins on purchase or first use and whether it expires on a calendar date. These details can matter more than a small difference in price if a yacht movement interrupts your plan.

Mobile data, calls and roaming

Begin with the phone and plan you already have. A physical SIM is a removable card; an eSIM is a digital subscription installed on a compatible handset. Check compatibility and any network lock before buying. Then establish whether the proposed service includes voice calls and texts or data only.

A data connection may be enough for maps and messaging but not for someone trying to call a new local number. Give the driver or receiving crew member the number or messaging contact that will remain reachable after activation. With two SIMs, check which line handles data and which remains active for calls.

TelEm’s own roaming guidance explicitly includes French Saint-Martin outside its home service area for roaming purposes. That is why an island-wide outing and a Dutch-side data allowance are different questions. Coverage, partner networks and charges depend on the particular provider and plan; do not generalise one company’s roaming policy to every SIM.

Before relying on the service away from Wi-Fi, confirm activation, allowance expiry and how to top up. Save essential contacts and a location pin offline as a fallback. The first-days orientation guide helps assemble that small set of useful information.

Everyday-services brief

  • Laundry type, quantity and care notes
  • Pickup and required return time
  • Gym location and day-pass terms
  • Shower, towel and locker requirements
  • Phone compatibility and SIM format
  • Dutch-side and French-side use
  • Top-up and roaming settings

Questions that change the plan

Will an eSIM give me a local telephone number?

Check the actual product. An eSIM describes how a subscription is installed; the plan determines whether it includes voice calls, texts or data only.

Can I assume a Dutch-side bundle covers French Saint-Martin?

No. TelEm explicitly discusses French-side use as roaming. Confirm the destination, networks and inclusions for your own provider and plan.

What is the most important detail in a laundry request?

The load, care requirements and usable return deadline belong together. Include the receiving point and person so finished items can get back aboard.
