Plan the day

Half a day ashore, without the rush

Choose a compact outing from Great Bay, Simpson Bay, Marigot or the west end, and understand how transfers, lunch and the final return use a short shore window.

“Four hours ashore” can describe very different outings. It might mean four hours after guests reach the marina gate, or four hours between leaving and returning to an anchored yacht. Before choosing an attraction, establish which clock is running. The enjoyable part of a short visit is the time left after all the handovers.

How much time is left for the outing

Start with when guests must be back aboard and trace the journey in reverse: tender or marina access, vehicle arrival, collection at the venue and the journey itself. The time before collection is what the outing can use. Include anything that must happen before departure, such as changing clothes or collecting purchases, rather than squeezing it into the transfer margin.

There is no reliable island-wide percentage for these allowances. A berth beside the chosen district and an anchorage requiring a tender create different needs. The marina neighbourhood guide helps establish the real starting point. If the available experience becomes too short, change the destination before shortening the margin.

Great Bay: give Philipsburg one purpose

A Great Bay landing can support a focused visit to Philipsburg’s town and waterfront. Choose the priority before leaving: a particular purchase, a walk followed by lunch, or time beside the beach. Then the Boardwalk becomes a useful connection within the outing instead of the start of an open-ended shopping circuit.

For shopping, identify the type of item and whether guests want to browse or make a purchase. A fitting, adjustment or collection can change when they are ready to leave. Lunch is easier to place when the shop visit has a clear finish. If browsing is the whole purpose, keep the meal optional rather than promising both.

Simpson Bay: stay near the actual landing

Simpson Bay’s dining and water activities create options for guests leaving the lagoon area, but a district name does not identify the pickup. A short outing should begin with the exact gate or landing and a specific destination. Otherwise the first part of the shore window can disappear while guests and the driver look for each other.

A meal with time beside the water can make a complete half day. A booked lesson can also work when its preparation and changing time fit. Avoid treating a one-hour session as a one-hour outing: the equipment fitting and return are still part of the guest experience.

Marigot and the west end

From Marigot, a street walk and lunch can remain compact. Fort Louis is an optional climb, not a prerequisite for enjoying the town. Anyone staying below needs a comfortable meeting place, while the climbing group needs a return time that still leaves room for lunch.

For a western pickup, one beach or one table often makes better use of the window than combining Cupecoy, Mullet Bay and Maho. Plane spotting is a distinct interest; it should earn its place rather than become an automatic stop on every west-end outing. Our beach guide covers the differences and Maho’s precautions.

A comfortable return

Give the driver a collection point that guests can identify, plus a practical alternative if the frontage is congested. The final destination should name the marina entrance or tender landing, not simply the yacht. The receiving crew member needs the same return information.

Leave one optional element outside the core plan. If the party starts late, remove it early and let the main experience keep its time. A short visit feels generous when guests can finish what they came to do, pay without rushing and find their transport ready at the agreed moment.

Keep the half day compact

  • Time measured from the actual landing to return aboard
  • One district and one main purpose
  • Preparation, billing and changing included
  • Exact vehicle and yacht handover points
  • An optional element that can be removed

Questions that change the plan

How much time should be reserved for transfers?

Use the actual landing, destination and return arrangements. A fixed fraction of the day cannot account for different marina gates, tender transfers or road conditions.

Can a short visit include both sides of the island?

Possibly, but the crossing should serve the main purpose of the outing. Seeing two places briefly is not automatically more rewarding than enjoying one.
