A Simpson Bay arrival has two clocks: the yacht’s estimated arrival offshore and the time it can actually reach the berth. Between them sits a controlled bridge movement. Treating those as separate events gives the bridge team room to manoeuvre and gives the shore team a realistic point from which to arrange the rest of the call.

Know which bridge your route uses

Simpson Bay Bridge connects the sea to the Dutch side of the lagoon. The Causeway Bridge is a separate crossing inside it. Depending on the berth and approach, your route may involve both; clearing the entrance does not necessarily finish the movement. Establish the complete route with the receiving marina before building the day around one opening.

The SLAC bridge page publishes separate movement information for the two bridges and directs vessels to VHF Channel 12. Read the inbound or outbound direction as carefully as the time. A listed opening describes the operating schedule; it is not a yacht-specific reservation or permission to enter.

Preparing the bridge call

The useful radio exchange begins with information already settled ashore: the yacht’s name, direction of travel and intended marina. SLAC asks for those details and for the fairway to remain clear for outbound vessels. Any handling limitation belongs in the advance discussion, so a last-minute radio exchange is not the first time the operator hears about it.

Before approaching, brief the bridge team on the planned movement, who will communicate and what will prompt a pause or an alternative. Put the marina’s arrival instructions beside the bridge information. A berth allocation and a bridge instruction answer different questions, and both are needed for a coordinated arrival.

Vessel fit deserves its own review. The lagoon access guide explains why arrival draft, maximum beam and the route beyond the entrance matter. Do not use the bridge’s closed height as a measure of clearance through an opened span.

Coordinating the shore plan

A provision delivery needs a receiving crew and an accessible yacht. A contractor needs to know when the relevant space or system will be available. Giving both an offshore ETA can put people at the dock while the vessel is still waiting outside. Use a provisional service window, then update it when the movement and berth status become clearer.

Arrange services early, with a clear distinction between reserving a workable option and instructing a vehicle or team to dispatch. Tell Sea Grapes which jobs depend on the transit and which can move if the sequence changes.

Planning the outward transit

Departure may be less flexible than arrival if a charter change, onward passage or crew movement sets a hard limit. Work backwards from the intended outward movement, allowing for clearance, disconnection of services and the yacht’s departure preparations. A delivery that is merely late should not quietly become a reason to miss the planned exit.

For an unusual movement or a request outside published arrangements, prepare a Sea Grapes movement brief early and identify the specific bridge. Keep the normal departure option in the plan until the relevant authority has accepted an alternative. On the day, current operator instructions govern the movement.

Before the approach

  • Settle the berth and marina arrival instructions.
  • Send LOA, beam, draft, air draft, GT, ETA and intended marina.
  • Check the live SLAC page and intended movement.
  • Test VHF Channel 12 and brief the bridge team.
  • Use current charts and a vessel-specific passage plan.
  • Tell shore teams that bridge timing remains subject to change.
