Pinel and Tintamarre offer two different ways to leave the main island behind. At Pinel, a lunch booking can give the day a centre. At Tintamarre, the boat and its team provide much of the practical support. That difference matters more than which island looks quieter in a photograph, especially when the party has mixed swimming confidence or needs an easy exit.
Pinel: a meal can hold the day together
The Réserve Naturelle identifies lunch restaurants on Pinel. That makes it a candidate for guests who want time on the sand with somewhere to eat, rather than a completely self-contained excursion. Some people can settle around lunch while others spend more time in the water, provided the group’s supervision and meeting arrangements work.
Do not treat the restaurant as proof of every facility the party needs. Seating, shade, toilets, changing and the path from the landing should be confirmed for the actual booking. Likewise, a lunch reservation does not automatically reserve transport off the island. Set the departure and return method as part of the same plan.
Tintamarre: the boat is part of the guest base
The reserve describes Tintamarre’s protected coast, snorkelling near Baie Blanche and a walking path to another beach. The appeal is time in a less developed setting. Plan the outing without relying on a beach club to provide water, shade, lunch or a replacement for something left aboard.
That changes the questions for the party. Can everyone board and leave the boat comfortably? Is there suitable shade for someone who wants to stop swimming? Where are belongings kept, and what happens if one guest wants an early return? A boat chosen only for passenger capacity may not provide the kind of base the day requires.
Snorkelling means observing from the surface with a mask and breathing tube; it still requires confidence in the actual conditions. The presence of a snorkelling site does not make it suitable for every participant. Wildlife can be a welcome part of the experience, but a turtle sighting cannot be built into the promise.
Getting to the island
A shuttle, a private excursion boat and the yacht’s tender create different pickup and return arrangements. The captain must settle the tender or vessel plan, including landing suitability. Guests should receive a simple explanation of how they will transfer, whether a wet landing is expected and what footwear or assistance is appropriate.
The Port of Saint-Martin’s current notices include anti-sargassum barriers and anchoring restrictions in Cul-de-Sac Bay. For a Pinel plan using that area, have the captain or operator check the current notice and access arrangements. Do not turn a familiar departure point into an assumption that the approach is unchanged.
The reserve shapes what can be offered
Commercial activities in the French-side Réserve Naturelle require prior authorization. An operator’s willingness to accept a booking is not evidence that its authorization covers the intended activity and area. Jet skis are prohibited within the reserve, so they cannot be offered as a way to reach or explore Pinel.
Mooring means securing the boat to an installed buoy rather than using its anchor. Published capacities differ between sites and documents; the captain needs the marked limits and current reserve instructions for the chosen mooring. A guest itinerary should not supply a universal vessel limit. Overnight mooring at Pinel is prohibited, and an afternoon lunch booking is not an overnight access plan.
An alternative with the same appeal
If Pinel was selected for lunch and comfortable seating, a suitable mainland beach restaurant can preserve most of the occasion. If Tintamarre was selected for a quiet nature outing, another active or coastal experience may fit better than a busy lunch venue. Use the beach guide to discuss the options before making commitments.
A substitute should also reduce the problem that stopped the first plan. Moving to another boat trip does little if boarding or sea conditions were the concern. Sea Grapes can connect the guest brief with transport and available arrangements once the marine side is settled.
Choose the islet and prepare it properly
- Lunch-centred Pinel or a self-contained Tintamarre outing
- Access method, boarding assistance and return
- Operator authorization for the activity and area
- Shade, water, food and belongings
- Current reserve and port notices checked by the boat team
Questions that change the plan
Is either island private?
Neither should be offered as an exclusive island experience. A private boat or reserved table does not control other visitors.
Can the yacht’s tender be used?
The captain must confirm the tender, operating rules, approach and landing. Sea Grapes can coordinate the guest arrangements around the agreed method.
Is Tintamarre suitable for a mixed group?
It may be, when the boat provides a comfortable base and everyone can manage the transfers. The ability to rest or return is as relevant as swimming confidence.
